MetEd, or Metropolitan Edison, serves electricity as a subsidiary of holding company FirstEnergy to 1.3 million customers in a 3,300-sq. mi. service area in south central and eastern Pennsylvania.
In 2001, FirstEnergy merged with GPU, Inc., MetEd's parent company, bringing MetEd into FirstEnergy as well. MetEd operates almost 16,500 miles of power transmission and distribution lines. Although the company's primary source of electricity is derived from oil- and gas-fired units, its York Haven Power Company generates hydroelectric power.
